When I underwent Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
as a detained psychiatric hospital inpatient in 2012 until 2014 and learnt that
self-soothing and distraction are two skills that I/my safety really benefit
from; I was a bit reluctant to tell anyone. I worried that admitting that doing
my nails or my make-up or getting cosy in a blanket with a candle would appear
superficial and materialistic. I worried people would question just how
distressed I was if something that is arguably simple and easy to do, could
alleviate it. Eventually though, I came to the healthy, positive, and
productive conclusion that I shouldn’t be judged for what I find helpful if
someone truly cares about me, they should really just be grateful that I have
found something healthy and safe which is beneficial to my mental health. And
to those who judge me anyway? Well, that says more about them than it does me.
So, please don’t be afraid to talk about what you
find helpful and please don’t judge someone else for their coping mechanisms.
